UK motorway junction locations for GPS units.
=============================================

These files identify the locations of almost all of the major motorway junctions
and service areas in the UK. The waypoints were measured by hand from the
Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 series of maps. The target accuracy was +/- 50m.

The coordinates use the Ordnance Survey British National Grid system (transverse
Mercator projection) with a letter pair prefix followed by a 5 digit Easting and
5 digit Northing giving a 1 metre resolution. The geoid uses the Airey ellipsoid
of 1830.

To make it easier to load into a GPS reciever the list has been split up into
three parts; south, central and north. There is a little overlap between the
areas. But you may want to build your own files for your area from this data.
This conforms with the memory limitations of a reciever that can hold only 250
waypoints and 19 routes of up to 30 waypoints each (for example a Garmin 45).

The areas correspond to:

South - London, the South coast, and up to the southern edge of
          Birmingham.
Central - Gloucester-Oxford-Luton northwards, Birmingham area,
          Manchester, Leeds.
North - Manchester/Chester area northwards, Scotland.

Each area has two files, waypoints and routes:

UKNORTH .WPT Waypoints for northern UK
UKNORTH .RTE Routes for northern UK
COMPOSIT.WPT All the waypoints combined (no routes)

The waypoint file conatins all the relevant waypoints of junctions and service
areas. The routes file links these in the appropriate sequence. Some motorways
are split into up to three routes to get under the 30 waypoint per route
limitation.

The way points are named xxJyy where xx is the motorway number and yy the
junction number. A sixth character is used for auxiliary junctions, for example
40J23B. One exception is the M180 which uses 180Jyy names for the waypoints.
Sometimes a motorway will start or finish without a formal junction number at
either end. In this case the waypoint xxJST is used for the start and xxJEN for
the end (see the M58 for an example). Service areas are named SVxxzz where xx is
the motorway number and zz is the sequential service station number on that
motorway. Note that some service areas are only accessible from a particular
direction and this is denoted in the auxiliary text for example 'BURTON - N
ONLY' shows that Burton services are only accessible when travelling northbound.

Accuracy
--------
The data was measured by hand on 1:50,000 maps. The expected accuracy is about
+/-50m. However some complex junctions are not very clearly defined as a single
point so I have used my, hopefully consistent, judgement. I have not tested all
the data so there is bound to be the odd mistake. I will continue to search for
and correct these. I might be missing a couple of service areas as some of the
OS maps that I used were a few years old.

The routes include service areas in the appropiate places and are numbered in
ascending order of motorway number as follows:

Uploading
---------
To load a Garmin 45 with the data you need software that is compatible with
Garmins protocol. Set the GPS unit coordinates to British Grid and the reference
to Ord Srvy GB. Set the I/O protocol to GRMN/GRMN. First upload the appropriate
waypoint file then the routes file.

The files have been converted to the format used by the PCX5 interface software
by Garmin.

Any corrections gratefully recieved and will be supported.

Disclaimer
----------
Use the data at your own risk. I accept no responsibility at all for any
inaccuracies. You have been warned. Fair enough?

Why?
----
Well I thought that sooner or later someone had to do it so why not myself? I
hoped that it would not take too much time if I was properly organised. But it
turned into one of those projects where you only realise how much time it takes
when you are half way through. I hate giving up halfway. So here it is,
complete, more or less. Applause, brickbats, send them in.
